Index of Protection

The index of protection classifies electrical equipment according to the level of protection against contact and electrical safety as well as against the ingress of foreign bodies and water or moisture.

First Index Number: Protection against solid objects

IP 0x No protection against solid objects

IP 1x Protection against solid objects >50mm

IP 2x Protection against solid objects >12mm

IP 3x Protection against solid objects >2,5mm

IP 4x Protection against solid objects >1mm

IP 5x Protection against dust limited ingress

IP 6x Protection against any entry of dust

Second Index Number: Protection against water

IP x0 No protection against water

IP x1 Protection against falling drops of water (vertically)

IP x2 Protection against direct sprays of water (inclination 15°)

IP x3 Protection against falling sprays of water (inclination 60°)

IP x4 Protection against direct sprays of water from all directions

IP x5 Protection against low pressure jets of water

IP x6 Protection against temporary flooding of water

IP x7 Protection against temporary immersion in water

IP x8 Protection against continuous submersion in water

Example

IP 65 Dust-tight and jetwater-proof

BuR Lighting High Bay luminaires have at least the index IP65.

Protection Classes

According to EN 61140 and IEC 60417, luminaires are assigned to the following protection classes:

Protection Class I

Luminaires of protection class I are prepared for electrical grounding to a protective conductor. BuR Lighting luminaires meet at least this requirement.

Protection Class II

Luminaires of protection class II are insulated and therefore do not require electrical grounding to a protective conductor. Most functional luminaires from BuR Lighting meet the requirements of protection class II.

Protection Class III

Luminaires of protection class III are designed for operation at a safety extra-low voltage of max. 50V.
